A long, long time ago, I was once given the position of a finance and admin associate. In simple terms, I was an assistant of the whole office. I was assigned to do the bookkeeping functions as well as the admin assistant functions in the company I was once employed at. It was a daunting task considering the company was a big one in the entertainment industry. I did not mind doing the work meant for three people because I was enjoying it. I fell in love with a man who I thought was free to love me. Thank goodness it took me only a couple of months to realize that he wasn’t free at all. He was deeply committed to someone else. And there was a child in the middle of us all.

I was so in love with the guy that there was a war going on inside me… do I let him go or fight for him? I did the former. If there was not a child involved, I would have fought for him. But the child made me see things differently. It was not easy, letting him go. But the decision was made easily.

His happiness lies in his child. And the child’s future lies with her father. I would never take that away from anyone, least of all someone I loved.

A great grand aunt of mine loves collecting recipes. She has recipes for all occasions, including Thanksgiving recipes. So when there is an upcoming party and we want something special for that occasion, we will go to her to ask for a recipe.

Since my sister also loves to cook, she is starting to collect her own recipes. And there’s a twist to it. Once she has tried a recipe and she “edited” it to suit her tastes, she will write it down in detail so that the next time someone asks her for that kind of recipe, she could give it to the person the way she cooked it.

I saw a whole rack of industrial knobs yesterday at a hardware store. Do you know what’s the first thing that came to my mind? The story my friend told me. It was about the day her fiance told him about the girl he impregnated. Because of her anger, she almost ripped the doorknob to show her fiance the door. And if you knew their doorknob, you know it was sturdy. To be able to loosen it even a little bit just showed how angry and hurt my friend was.

But that was four years ago. She is now happily married.

I was watching a reality show this evening. One of the guys in it is always brooding, his face always frowning. I wonder if funny t-shirts will crack him up. I always tell my brother, whom I always see frowning as well, that negativity like that can cause damage to one’s personality. No need to smile all the time, that would make you look crazy. But to frown all the time? That’s stressful to you and the people looking at you. Just maintain a calm expression and everything will follow suit.

Let the world stop turning, let the sun stop burning, let them tell me love’s not worth going through. If it all falls apart, I will know deep in my heart, the only dream that mattered had come true… In this life I was loved by you.

If only someone will utter these words to me…

How do you feel about dating co-workers?

I don’t believe this is advisable. In fact, I would advise otherwise. No to office dating! Before anything else, I believe this brings complication and awkwardness to an office setting. There will be talks, especially if the person you are dating is someone in a higher position. Now, let’s say everything is going well with the two of you. No hassles. All your co-workers accept your relationship. Then comes a fight. Just think how awkward it will be. Let’s go fast forward. You two broke up. How much more awkwardness can you put in the situation?

Of course, I am being pessimistic here. I am aware of the fact that some couples who started out as co-workers ended up married and having a great relationship. But this is the exception to the rule.

There are a lot of Brazilians here in the country right now. I was able to talk to one of them when I went to my uncle’s birthday party last Saturday. I was fascinated with his description of his motherland that it almost made me say yes right away to his invitation.

When I got home, I checked some Brazil vacation packages. I would love to go on a vacation some time soon. Maybe early next year. I still have to save some trip money.

There was this overwhelming need to talk about light topics with the two people I can be sure to humor me… my two former staff in a corporation I worked for. These two always indulge me. When I am stressed out about life, they know exactly what to talk about to take away thoughts that are making me worried about things. They can talk about the grass and even crank flashlight all they want and they could make it interesting. Such is their gift.

Do you think men and women can be just friends? Why or why not?

I saw this question somewhere and my take on it is… Yes, men and women can be just friends. In my case, anyway. I have been friends with several men from my high school class for over 15 years now. I was even friends with most of their exes. My best friend, Lem, was and still is my best friend for years now. And I’ve known him since we were pre-schoolers.

Of course, I am speaking only for myself and several of my girl friends. I know for some this is not possible. But, yes, men and women can be just friends.
